5 Ways to Build a Fitness Habit
Why are some things so hard to start, while others are so hard to stop? Case in point - Can’t start exercising, but can’t stop snacking! The one word answer is “Habit”. Forming a habit takes time, discipline, perseverance… and these 5 steps.
Frame your mind
Habits are more than just repetitive actions. They are rooted in a state of mind, and are developed through having the right support and interest. It is important to listen to your own body, and don’t compare yourself to others. Constantly fixating on what others are achieving will take focus away from your own improvements, and can be great demotivators.
Start small
We are hardwired to stay away from things that depresses us. Therefore, don’t start too big, or aim too high. Always make sure your goals are achievable. When you notice yourself hitting those little milestones, and feeling your body change, you will want more. One advice is to write down your goals for the day, and check it off as you progress. It’s much easier to aim for the next goal when it is visible and attainable.
Hold yourself accountable with a schedule
Consistency is key, and that is definitely the case for exercise. This is a game-changer, and is fairly obvious. You’re looking to build a habit, after all! Make sure the routine you create suits your day-to-day, so you minimize the opportunity for you to flake out on your exercise. Don’t set yourself up to fail. It helps if you plan these time blocks into your work calendar as well, so they become periods of break and unwinding - something to look forward to.
Dress for the occasion
We really don’t have an excuse now, especially if you are working from home. Don’t be lazy to change out into something suitable for your workout. Better yet, choose activewear that is suitable both for that Zoom meeting, and your HIIT session. Trust us, nothing motivates you better than new clothes to change into. It is also important you choose materials that you stay comfortable in - sweat-wicking is a must to keep you dry and odorless. You will never stick to an activity if you feel uncomfortable doing it.
